The Junior League of Bryan-College Station

Message from the President

Dear League Members, Community Partners, Sponsors, and Friends,Jill Hughson, 2017-2018 President

It is my distinct pleasure to serve as President of The Junior League of Bryan-College Station, Inc. (JLBCS) for the 2017-2018 League year. Leading this outstanding group of women is an honor and a privilege, and I am so excited for what is in store for this year.

Over the past 35 years, our League has accomplished many amazing things and helped develop the potential of hundreds of women who are now well-known leaders in our community. We have a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the children and youth in Bryan-College Station, and we work hard every day to make the most of our resources and partnerships.

JLBCS is known for many things throughout the community. Stuff the Bus, our signature project, supplies thousands of children in both the Bryan and College Station independent school districts with the tools they need to be successful. Without this project, these children would not have supplies to start their school year. The community has come out in full force for the past 17 years to make this a highly successful and anticipated project. We host our annual Charity Ball,a night of glamour, food and drink, and dancing. Our largest fundraising effort of the year, Charity Ball ensures our League can continue to support local agencies throughout the following League year. And finally, Bargain Blitz, a community-wide rummage sale, serves as a resource for the people of Bryan-College Station, and beyond,  by allowing community members an opportunity to purchase gently used items at very affordable prices. For many families, this sale supplies them with clothing, furniture, toys, and other goods, they may otherwise go without.

In addition to these three large events, our members also devote volunteer hours to agencies such as Scotty’s House (a recipient of one of our $35,000 grants last year), the Brazos Valley Food Bank, the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, Family Promise of Bryan-College Station (our other recipient of a $35,000 grant last year), and more. In order to continue our success we call on you, the community, to work with us as we strive to make our home the best it can be. Without your donations, sponsorships, engagement, and support, we would not be able to help as we do.

Many times, as women, we are told we should “smile more.” Sometimes, that simple phrase can cause an opposite reaction.  “iSMILE: Serve l Mentor l Inspire l Lead l Engage” was chosen as this year’s theme to bring a more empowering definition to “smile more.”  This group of strong, smart, caring, and dedicated women is up to the challenge to “SMILE more” this year.

I invite you to join us as we live our Mission by attending our Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive, Charity Ball, and Bargain Blitz.  If you are interested in joining our League, please fill out a Potential Member Inquiry Form, and we will get you in contact with our Membership Development Chair.  And as always, we welcome support from our generous community with our various opportunities for sponsorship!  I look forward to meeting all of you and hope you too will accept the challenge of iSMILE.

Sincerely,

Jill Hughson

2017-2018 League President
