Brazos Food Bank - Backpack Program
There are children in the Brazos Valley that rely on resources such as free or reduced-price school lunch during the school year. The Backpack Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. Backpacks are filled with food that children take home on the weekends. The food is child-friendly, nonperishable, easily consumed and vitamin fortified. Backpacks are discretely distributed to children on the last day before the weekend or holiday vacation and returned during the next week to refill for the following distribution. Volunteers will be organizing the warehoused food for the backpacks, filling the backpacks and assisting with delivery of the backpacks to the designated school.
Brazos Food Bank
The Brazos Food Bank seeks to eliminate hunger by the distribution of food and grocery products through a network of nonprofit organizations while providing education and community awareness on issues of hunger. In 2003, the Junior League of Bryan-College Station named the Brazos Food Bank as the recipient of the first Future Impact Gift (FIG).In 2007, the Junior League of Bryan-College Station, Inc.celebrated its 25th Anniversary. To mark this occasion, the FIG was created. Several agencies submitted proposals requesting funding for a large financial gift with a volunteer component that might better the lives of children and youth in the community. After a quite extensive review process, the Brazos Food Bank was awarded the gift andwas toreceive a minimum of $100,000 up to $250,000 to retire the debt on its new facility over 5 years. In appreciation the Food Bank renamed its food distribution facility The Junior League Center.
In addition, the Junior League will provide volunteer assistance through 2007 by assisting with the Feast of Caring and the Annual Food for Families Food Drive. A check was presented to the Brazos Food Bank by the Junior League of Bryan-College Station in May 2007 for a total of $200,000.
